Imagining an inclusive and digital education system
adapted to students with cancer
Children who use prosthetics due to cancer or accidents face a particularly delicate moment when they return to school. Far from being solely a period of recovery and reunion, in many cases they encounter looks of incomprehension, fear and social barriers that hinder their well-being, inclusion and educational development.
The project SUPERHERO SCHOOL: IMAGINING AN INCLUSIVE AND DIGITAL EDUCATION SYSTEM ADAPTED TO STUDENTS WITH CANCER was created to transform that reality. It promotes an innovative comprehensive system of prevention, detection, intervention and monitoring that places the well-being of students at the center and promotes their inclusion, educational success and recovery process. Through a cross-cutting strategy, the project promotes action programs in educational centers that cover all areas, with personalised itineraries and specific resources, supported by a digital platform based on AI.
The following workpackages are defined in the project:
WP1 - Project Management: monitoring the progress, quality and achievement of the project.
WP2 - Building the work plan for educational centers: focused on creating a strategy to transform the work of attention to diversity at the center involving their local communities (associations, health services, institutions, etc.).
WP3 - Generating resources for teachers and inclusion in the classroom: focused on training and working with teachers, creating resources and proposals for adapting the educational plan to offer inclusion options to students with disabilities.
WP4 - The strategy for superheroes to raise awareness among students and European society: focused directly on the students. The goal is to change awareness about the illness in order to promote values of diversity.
It also aims to promote the visibility and dissemination of the project through high-impact SUPERHERO DAYS.

The results of this project are very suitable to work on Hate Speech in the classroom and the bullying it leads to. On the one hand, the Open Educational Resources of the Kits are very complete, working exhaustively on the many types of Hate Speech that exist; on the other hand, the virtual environment for the detection of Hate Speech in the classroom is a very useful educational tool for teachers, since it allows to discover which are the main Hate Speeches present among students and work directly with them.

As a parent, nothing is harder than watching your child feel excluded after months of illness. The Superhero School guide gave the teachers the tools to prepare everyone — and my daughter walked back into school feeling celebrated, not different.
The R5 course for teachers completely changed how our staff approaches the topic of illness and vulnerability in the classroom. The materials are thoughtful, evidence-based, and immediately applicable. We have already recommended it to three other schools.
